Steps towards preserving your fine rugs:

 

Vacuuming

Oriental rugs should be vacuumed on a weekly basis. Using a good quality vacuum system with a beater brush is the best. Be very careful around fringes as these can be damaged by a vacuum cleaner!

 

Cleaning your Rugs

Your Oriental rugs can last generations provided you give them the proper care. Depending on the amount of traffic a rug should be cleaned professionally at least once every two to three years. Rugs that are exposed to children or pets may require yearly cleaning. Though a rug may not look dirty it can accumulate dirt that is not visible to the eye. If a rug is not cleaned for years, soil can accumulate at the bottom of the pile and over time destroy the foundation.  Rugs can hold POUNDS of soils so it is imperitive that these soils be removed!

 

Basic Stain Removal Methods

Use only cold water and woolite to clean dirt or some food stains. Use a clean towel by using the lather from your cleaning solution and blot the stain using the towel. Don't rub or use a brush as you can cause pile distortion!

 

In some instances white vinegar can be used also, especially with pet urine.  Some rugs are not color fast and the dye may run as the result of cleaning them with water. If it already shows signs of color bleeding do not attempt cleaning it!
